Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is an approach to faith formation for children ages 3 to 12. It was developed in Rome by Dr. Sofia Cavaletti and Gianna Gobbi in 1954 and has since expanded worldwide. It is rooted in the Bible, the liturgy of the church, and the educational principles of Maria Montessori. It is based on the conviction that God and the child are already in a relationship. The task before us is to help the child deepen that relationship.
Catechesis takes place in a specially prepared environment called the atrium. The atrium is a place where the child is guided in a personal relationship with Jesus through presentations and simple materials for the child to use.
